Day 1-The big travel day
The day has finally come! I FINALLY get to go to Japan!
I will tell you, I had such bad anxiety getting over here that I made myself nauseous. Luckily I had some remedies for such ailments and did not need to worry about potentially vomiting on any of the planes!
Today (9/24) started at 5:30 when I woke up to make it to the airport. Bless Greg for waking up that early after working his swing shift until 11pm. He deserves a medal for that! He even took this cute photo of me at the airport…
(He got me at a good time. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t shed a few tears immediately after going through security)
The first flight was from Salt Lake to Seattle (SLC-SEA for all you av geeks out there!) and it was relatively smooth. There were some bumps on arrival, but I didn’t mind. I got a great view of Mt. Rainier on approach!
After that was my flight to Calgary (SEA-YYC) which was also not exciting. A bit bumpy on arrival, but nothing terrible. I cleared border control and was promptly informed that my next flight was boarding! I eagerly got in line, and I was off…
I got into my seat for the next 10 hours, got cozy (or as cozy as you can in those seats) and we were off! (YYC-NRT, if you wanted to follow) I flew WestJet (a Canadian company) and they weren’t half bad-the seat was uncomfortable (but to be expected in economy) but the food for the meals was pretty decent. I got the cheese tortellini and ate a good portion of it!
I then tried to take a nap (or two) on the plane and ended up getting a whopping 1.5 hours total. It’s not much, but I’ll take it!
I also was reading all the iMessages/WhatsApps from people, and I must say, I have the best family around…
We started making our descent into Tokyo Narita and it was a smooth transition from air to ground. I made my way through customs and immigration easily (but that comes with packing in two carry-ons for a two week trip haha) and made my way to the JR NEX that took me from Narita into downtown Tokyo. All in all, that train took about an hour and it was really comfortable! I found a taxi to take me to my hotel, and now I’m here, writing this blog post.
I’m hoping to do another blog post tomorrow afternoon (or at least afternoon in Japan) with some more pictures and videos. Please forgive me if it doesn’t happen-I’m fighting some serious jet lag to write this entry and I still need to figure out a small meal before climbing into bed tonight!
